Letter of Guidance from the Gaon Rabbi Aharon Cohen, Rosh Yeshivah of Chevron, to a Young Man Just Starting Out (Later one of the Geonim of the Generation)

"The beginning will not be easy on you, but in the end, you will become, be'ezrat Hashem accustomed to diligence. The most important thing is not to be taken aback by failures, should they occur."

Extremely important letter of guidance for a young man just starting on his path to scholarship, entirely handwritten by the gaon Rabbi Aharon Cohen, rosh yeshivah of Chevron, during his vacation in a pastoral location in Tiberias. Tiberias, 1930s.

It can be understood from the letter that the addressee, who is named in the letter, as is the way of youth when they first set out, found great difficulty in-depth study as well as with the required diligence. In this letter, the rosh yeshivah guides him like a faithful pedagogue. He does not hide the expected difficulties, but he does promise him that if he sees it through, he will overcome them. They will dissipate and he will find the road paved smoothly for him. Rabbi Aharon also guides him in a practical way, telling him to focus specifically on studying beki'ut "In my opinion, you should focus on quantity, and quality will come over time."

It is touching to see how the gaon Rabbi Aharon Cohen, who was childless, invests all his energy and love in his disciple, guiding him and discussing his studies with this fresh student in his attempts at chiddushei Torah.

Rabbi Aharon's toil was not for nothing, and his dedicated guidance bore sweet fruit. Not much later, as can be understood from this letter, from his early beginnings with difficulty in in-depth study, the addressee became a huge talmid chacham and mechadesh, to the extent that in approbations to his sefer, gedolei haTorah write using rare expressions: The gaon Rabbi Binyamin Zilber writes about him: "I know him from a long time ago as a very accomplished person, sharp and expert, familiar with all areas of Torah ... he speaks with gedolei hador such as the Chazon Ish ztzukllh"h and the gaon, the rosh yeshivah, Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer ztzukllh"h." The gaon Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky writes that he knows the author, and he is a great talmid chacham!
