Pnei Yitzchak, Two Parts. Mantua, Pedigree Copy. Lengthy Glosses
"HaRav HaKollel HaYashish U'Neso Panim Rabbi Eliyahu HaLevi z"l, rabbi of Alessandria della Paglia ... his genius, his righteousness, his piousness and his sanctity saved his community as well, with the power of his yichudim and prayer which are known to all" (The Chid"a, in his sefer Chaim Sha'al Part II)
Sefer Pnei Yitzchak on the halachahs of gittin and chalitzah. Two parts with two separate title pages, by the gaon Rabbi Chizkiyah Mordechai Bashan (Bassan) ztzuk"l, reish metivta and lecturer in Verona. With an approbation by Kabbalist Rabbi Raphael Emmanuel Chai Ricci. Mantua, 1744. First edition.
The first part is a guide to arranging gittin and chalitzah. The arrangement of gittin is called "Michtav L'Chizkiyahu" and the arrangement of chalitzah is called "Ma'amar Mordechai." These titles are taken from the author's two names. The second part is responsa entitled "Kro Mikra " "Assur Kedushah" and "Shomer Shabbat, " by Rabbi Menachem Navirah, grandson and disciple of Rabbi Chizkiyah Mordechai Bashan.
Hundreds of lines of rabbinic glosses appear along the sheets of both parts; some of the glosses are especially lengthy and continue around the entire page. The glosses are written in Judeo-Italian script from the period of printing. The handwriting is identical to that of the gaon Rabbi Eliyahu HaLevi, av beit din of Alessandria, who "saved his community with the power of his yichudim and prayer" (as stated by the Chid"a). The wording of the glosses reveals that his son was also the av beit din of the city, for example, "On the 14th of the month of Menachem 1762 ... I appointed the dayanim Rabbi Elazar Aharon Poleissi and Rabbi Shlomo Michael Yonah together with me, and for the other two, the officer Yisrael and the officer Yechiel Eliezer, kohanim, sons of Vitali." This expression he uses, "I appointed, " demonstrates that the writer is the av beit din, the one who appoints the dayanim.
There is a signed gloss in this sefer handwritten by his son and successor, the gaon Rabbi Moshe Zakut, av beit din of Alessandria, who signs, "The youth, his son Maza"l [Moshe Zakut Levi]. Another gloss in his hand is signed, "The youth, his son Maza"l [Moshe Zakut Levi], I arranged ... this chalitzah and performed it at my home and within my walls in this place, on the twelfth day [...] Tishrei 1809."
Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the gaon Rabbi Eliyahu HaLevi.
