Set Dina D'Chayyei. First Editions. Copy that Belonged to the Gaon Rabbi Yehudah Yerucham Fishel Perla. Many Handwritten Glosses

Sefer Dina D'Chayyei, elucidation on Sefer Mitzvot Gadol - Sma"g by Rabbi Chaim Benveniste, author of Knesset HaGedolah - one of the leading poskim among the Acharonim. Two volumes. Constantinople, 1742. Rare and only (first) edition.

Personal copy that belonged to the wondrous gaon Rabbi Yerucham Fischel Perla, author of Hagahot HaGri"p and author of the monumental work on Rabbi Sa'adyah Gaon's enumeration of the 613 mitzvot. This work earned him eternal renown. Dozens of the Gri"p's owner's stamps appear along the leaves of the sefer [including a rare embossed stamp] as well as many scholarly glosses in his penmanship.

The Gri"p Perla was known for his magnum opus on the Rasa"g's Sefer HaMitzvot, which occupied him for close to forty years, fourteen of which, legend has it, he did not leave his house. His wife would serve his meals through a narrow window, and he would hear kaddish and kedushah from the window of his home. Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld observed about this composition, "Know that without forty straight years of toil and diligence, it would not have been within human capacity to produce such a work."

Dina D'Chayyei deals with the same topic discussed in the Gri"p Perla's magnum opus. There is no doubt that this copy was used extensively for the forty years he wrote his work on the Rasa"g's enumeration of mitzvot. And indeed, the sheets of the sefer contain many scholarly glosses, some lengthy, in Rabbi Fischel Perla's penmanship.

After Rabbi Perla's passing, the renowned gaon Rabbi Mendel Kasher purchased his library from his family for a large fortune. The gaon Rabbi Mendel Kasher also imprinted his owner's stamp on this volume, such that this important work here bears the owners' stamps of two of the leading geonim of Poland.

Rabbi Perla was known to adorn his sefarim with incredible glosses, many of which were printed posthumously by Rabbi Menachem Kasher in Hagahot HaGri"p (His glosses are printed on: Midrash Lekach Tov, Shu"t HaRashb"a, Shu"t HaRashba"sh, on Sefer Tashbe"tz, Noda BiYehudah, Ketzot HaChoshen, Avnei Miluim, Aruch LaNer, Minchat Chinuch and Shem HaGedolim by the Chid"a.) These glosses here have apparently not been printed.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the wondrous gaon Rabbi Yehudah Yerucham Perla of Warsaw.
