Fundamental Sefer: Nefesh HaChayim by the Gaon Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin. Vilna, 1824. First Edition

Nefesh HaChayim - Yir'at Hashem LaChayim. Topics in mussar, Kabbalah and machshavah in the depths of Judaism, by Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin, major primary disciple of the Gr"a of Vilna. Vilna and Horodna, 1824.

The gaon Rabbi Chaim lays out his teachings in Divine service in this sefer. The sefer was received as a fundamental work in all the yeshivahs in Lithuania.

First edition of this fundamental sefer later reprinted in dozens of editions.

The sefer is divided into four she'arim, each of which has its own individual pagination.

Rabbeinu Chaim of Volozhin considered this work to be more important than any of his voluminous writings in halachah. Before he passed away, he ordered his sons to hurry and publish it. The sefer was edited and brought to print by his son, the gaon Rabbi Yitzchak of Volozhin, and by his nephew, the gaon and Kabbalist Rabbi Avraham Simchah of Omtchislav, both of whom served as rashei yeshivah in Volozhin.

With a lengthy foreword by the author's eldest son, Rabbi Yitzchak of Volozhin, who writes about his father's greatness, and his connection to his teacher, the Gr"a.
