Shulchan Aruch. Kraków, 1618-1620, with Important Supplements in Hagahot HaRam"a. Three Parts. Glosses

Shulchan Aruch with Hagahot HaRam"a and with the addition of references and sources for the Ram"a's words. Kraków, Bnei Yitzchak Ben Aharon of Prostitz Press, 1618-1620. Three parts.

Rare early edition printed in Kraków, where the Ram"a lived, less than fifty years after his passing, with important supplements.

The Ram"a, in his glosses on the Shulchan Aruch, did not include his sources, and he went with the style of the "Mechaber, " who also did not include his sources. However, editions of the Shulchan Aruch contain added references for the Ram"a's words. Over the years, there were those who thought the Ram"a himself wrote the references, which has halachic ramifications. However, this is not the case - the Chid"a himself discusses the matter.

In the edition printed in Kraków in 1707, references were added for the Ram"a for the first time. This edition is from before references were added.

Many have discussed the important question of who added the references to the Ram"a's words. However, it appears that the additions to this particular edition were by Rabbi David Tevele b"r Yechezkel. Regarding differences from the references here and the references in the Kraków 1707 edition, refer to Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim published by Machon Yerushalayim, as well as in the article by Rabbi Avigdor Berger (Zechor L'Avraham, Cholon, 1990, 38-42)

In the Yoreh Deah section, handwritten glosses from the time of printing in antique Ashkenazic script. Owner's notation in beautiful penmanship at the end "signed, Tzvi Hirsch son of Rabbi Avraham Segal of Chmelnik - near Kraków, Poland, who teaches in Masbach (near Nuremberg, in southeast Germany) Karlsfeld, Germany ... 22 Elul, [chronogram תיו צדיק טית]. The Even HaEzer volume bears a signature on the title page: "Zelikman Emden" [?].

Three parts of this rare and early edition. To the best of our knowledge, a complete set of this edition has never been sold at auction.
