Tiferet Yisrael - Mahara"l. Venice, 1599. First Edition, Especially Rare
Tiferet Yisrael on the virtues of the Torah and of the Jewish people, by Rabbi Yehudah Loew - the Mahara"l of Prague. With the last leaf, which is a completion for an omission in the body of the book - this leaf is lacking in many copies. Venice. 1599. Rare first edition printed in the author's lifetime.
Before us is one of the fundamental books of Jewish thought, written by one of the leading thinkers of all time. The title page refers to the Mahara"l using rare terms, uncharacteristic for living authors: "There is no one like him on the face of the earth, a G-dly angel of the Heavenly realms, marvelous gaon, wonder of the generation ... Rabbi Yuda Loew ... the secret place of his might and the light of his Torah is in the holy community of Prague." Owners' notations on the title page, and a one-word gloss on page 54a from the time of printing.
Refer to the Hebrew website catalog text for a brief biography of Rabbi Yehuda Loew.
65 leaves, 27 cm. Stefansky, Sifrei Yesod 501.
Fine-very fine condition. Minimal aging stains. The margins of the title page are cropped. Magnificent new parchment binding.
